  • Can I build the kitset myself as an owner-builder or DIYer?
Yes, many of our clients are confident DIYers or qualified builders who assemble the kitsets themselves. If you have basic building skills or are working alongside a qualified builder, you should be able to install the panels. Our system is designed for straightforward assembly, but familiarity with framing, insulation, and weatherproofing will help ensure a smooth build. It is essential to meet any condition of compliance with the local building authority. If looking to take advantage of the Owner-Builder Exemption, we recommend checking with your local council regarding regulations and whether a licensed building practitioner (LBP) is required for consent sign-off.
  • Do you have preferred builders or installation partners in my region?
Yes, we work with a growing network of builders across New Zealand. If you’re looking for a recommended installer in your area, we’re happy to connect you with someone who’s familiar with our system.
  • How much does delivery cost to my area?
Freight costs vary depending on the size of your kitset and your delivery address. Once we have a few project details, we’ll provide an estimate that includes delivery fees.
  • Do I need to have power or water on site before delivery?
While not essential for the delivery itself, having basic services available (especially power and access to a flat build site) can help streamline the construction process and make things easier for your builder or installer.
  • Can your panels be installed on a sloped or rural site?
Yes, many of our kitsets are built on rural or uneven terrain. We can adapt the design to suit a variety of foundations, but we recommend discussing your site’s topography during the initial stages to ensure the best structural outcome.
  • Do I need a site plan to get started?
A basic site plan helps us provide accurate pricing and assess the best layout for your location. If you don’t have one yet, we can guide you through what’s needed to move forward.
  • Can I customise the layout or design of a kitset?
Yes, we can work with you to tweak layouts, or explore other modifications to suit your vision. Just keep in mind our kitset pricing is based on the current external shell – you can move internal walls for a minor fee but if you start to move walls, windows and doors there are some further associated costs. Let us know what you have in mind when you get in touch and we can guide you accordingly.
  • How long does the full process take, from enquiry to delivery?
On average, the timeline includes 1–2 weeks for consultation and quoting, 2–4 weeks for final drawings and documentation, and around 8 – 12 weeks for panel manufacturing and dispatch. Timeframes may vary depending on demand and consent processes.
  • Do you help with building consent or council paperwork?
Yes. Our architecture partner helps prepare all the necessary plans and documentation for your building consent application. We’re happy to support this part of the process or coordinate with your chosen architect.
  • I’m just exploring, can I get a ballpark figure before committing?
Absolutely. You will find pricing throughout the website, to arrange a feasibility meeting with our architects to get a site specific estimate please get in touch. (Feasibility costs apply)
  • What’s the difference between a “Smart” floor plan and a custom design?
Our “Smart” floor plans are pre-designed, cost-efficient layouts optimised for simplicity and speed. A custom design gives you more flexibility, but may require extra time and design fees.
  • Can you add kits together to create extra space?
In terms of joining. We can create a custom design that meets your needs and is inspired by the simplicity of the smart series.
  • Can you add a garage?
Yes, we can extend some of the designs to form a garage out of smart panels. Have a chat with us and additional fees apply etc.
  • Can we have an ensuite?
Yes, most of our designs can accommodate an ensuite. If you’d like to modify a layout to include or adjust an ensuite, just let us know. We’ll work with you to make it fit seamlessly.
  • What kind of heating do we need?
Our panel system offers excellent thermal performance, so your heating requirements are significantly reduced compared to traditional builds. The right heating option depends on your region and preferences, all of which we can confirm during the design phase
  • Can we have a fireplace?
Fireplaces aren’t typically needed in our kitset homes due to the high thermal efficiency of the panels (and there’s really strong evidence now around the health issues to occupants and neighbours), most clients find a heat pump more than sufficient. That said, if a fireplace is something you really want, we recommend discussing it with the architect early in the process. There are ways to incorporate one, but it may require adjustments to layout, clearances, and consents.
  • What is the kitchen layout?
Our standard kitset kitchens can be customised based on your needs. If you have specific preferences, our architects can adapt the space and designs.
  • What taps and lights are included in the kit pricing?
Taps, lights, and other fixtures are included as PC (Provisional Cost) sums in the kit pricing. This means an allowance is made, but the final selection is up to you. Your architect and builder will help you choose the specific fittings that best suit your style, budget, and project needs.
  • Can we add a mezzanine? And what are the implications of this?
Some of ourSmart Series clients have added mezzanines as part of the design. It is possible with some of the designs but additional cost apply.
  • What is the process for building a kitset or finding out the complete picture of site specific costs?
Architect Call + Feasibility Package: $1,300 + GST This package will include: A review of access constraints  Assessment of suitability for the Smart Series base package (architecture and engineering) Indicative pricing for your site
